– Operatives of the Directorate of State Security raided the residence of Bayelsa state monarch, King A.J Turner
– The traditional ruler was a very close associate of former president Goodluck Jonathan
– The Committee for Defence of Democracy condemned the raid describing it as abuse of power and rights
Operatives of the Directorate of State Security (DSS) raided the Maitama residence of Bayelsa state monarch, King A.J Turner, on Monday, February 8.
The operatives reportedly carted away some documents, including insignificant amount of dollars, pound sterling, naira and rupee.
Although the DSS is yet to disclose why it raided the monarch’s residence, it might be connected with his closeness with former president Goodluck Jonathan.
According to Leadership, the operatives carted away the following items: 60 pieces of £50 note; 46 pieces of £20 note; 113 pieces of $100 note; N5,000; 230 Indian rupee; complimentary cards of TRENUR Nigeria Ltd; a document containing account numbers of Miss Havi Mabel Turner; Miss Apelega Inengite; A.J Turner and TRENUR Nigeria Ltd; income & expenditure book of M.D Matelbot Oil Nigeria Ltd; a document on campaign fund-raising; some documents on financial transactions amongs.

In a swift reaction, the Committee for Defence of Democracy (CDD) condemned the raid describing it as abuse of power and rights.
The CDD made a statement in which it issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the DSS to desist from a glaring war against allies of the former president.
The committee also wondered what could warrant the raid of the monarch’s residence if not political vendetta.
“Consequent upon the latest action of the DSS invading the residence of King A.J Turner, the civil society situation room is issuing a 24-hour ultimatum to the DSS to desist from this glaring war against the South-south region, particularly allies of Jonathan.
“If so much honour and respect can be accorded to the traditional institutions in the North and Yoruba land, same institutions in the South-south cannot be subjected to ridicule in the name of political vendetta,” the statement read.
In September 2015, operatives of the DSS raided the government house in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital.
Shortly after the incidenet, the state House of Assembly described the raid as an“act of felony, persecution and political vendetta,” and threatened to drag the DSS to court.
