Senator of the Federal Republic Ben Murray-Bruce, representing Bayelsa East has faulted President Buhari’s policy of inaccessibility of forex to parents seeking to fund their children education abroad.
He took to his facebook page on Monday, saying it is awkward for a leader to say there will be no forex for education for Nigerian students schooling abroad.
President Muhammadu Buhari has said that Nigeria cannot afford to sell forex to parents seeking to fund their children education abroad followed a discovery that the high demand for forex by parents of the students studying abroad to pay their wards’ tuition fees had been putting unnecessary pressure on the Naira, which in turn affects Nigerian economy.
Ben-Bruce said, “Mr. President, these are people who voted for you. You ought to be more sensitive about their need for Forex For Education.
He noted that this year all tiers of government, including the Presidency, would spend billions importing cars, adding that if it could afford that, then the government should not give excuse on why it cannot afford Forex For Education.
“What do we expect parents whose kids have spent two years in schools abroad? Should their children drop out after going so far?
It’s not a matter of "those who can afford it". The parents aren't saying they can’t afford it. They're saying they can’t get Forex For Education,” he said.
The senator said that though he is an advocate of #BuyNaijaToGrowTheNaira but that he accepts that there are some programmes that are not run in Nigeria that some students will have to study abroad.
“If we can provide foreign exchange to those going on pilgrimage, surely we can provide #ForexForEducation. Education is a priority!
These policies will have the opposite effect of what you intend. Nigerians will take their funds to neighboring nations.
We as elected representatives of the people must be sensitive to their needs and reflect this sensitivity in policies,” he posited.
