Fayose reportedly pulled Ekiti monarch’s billboards
– Monarch says Fayose is after his life
– Asks federal government to intervene
The Ekiti state governor, Ayodele Fayose on Thursday evening went berserk in an act of street brawl, setting rival groups against each other over destruction of portraits belonging to Oba Ganiyu Ayodele Obasoyin, the Olukere of Ikere-Ekiti.
The incident was all over the social media as the governor and his aides were purportedly sighted perpetrated the act.
Eyewitnesses said trouble started when Fayose abruptly stopped his convoy and alighted from his vehicle and went straight to where the portraits of Olukere of Ikere were displayed and personally destroyed them.
Residents watched in disbelief as the governor moved from one portrait to another to destroy the placed portraits ans billboards of the monarch.
Our correspondent reliably gathered that obaship tussle in the once peaceful community was heated up by political undertone that has to set the people against each other.
Anger boiled over in a community sharply divided over the obaship tussle between Ogoga of Ikere and Olukere of Ikere.
Within minutes, Olukere’s supporters in their hundreds stormed the town and set bonfires around Post Office area of the town stretched to Akure road.
Motorists plying the route made detours, as travelers got stuck in the burst of mayhem while several others took streets roads to link the major road far away from the theatre of war.
Ogoga is reported to be Fayose’s acolyte, and it is believed that the governor played a prominent role in the emergence of the monarch more so, the matter remains a subject of heated confusion over tradition and right to the throne.
As at the time of filing this report, tension was still high as some residents have fled the town, anticipating bloodshed as the matter rages on.
Some of the residents who spoke with our correspondent declared that they had to run for their lives, saying: “the town is still tense and no one knows when the rage fired by the governor’s reckless conduct will subside.”
Meanwhile, the embattled Olukere of Ikere yesterday addressed press conference in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, where he alleged that the governor, Ayo Fayose is after his life.
The monarch also called on the federal government to call the governor to order as he will never succumb to his threat.
Olukere appealed to his subjects to maintain peace and order, urging the state governor to thread softly as he will never allow him (Fayose) to discredit the traditional institution.
